This reading was a great way to understand Darwin’s upbringing. ‘“Never become the friend of any one whom you cannot respect.’” This advice from Darwin’s father really moved me. I try to follow this idea in my own life, by surround myself by individual’s that I respect, and around those that are smarter than myself, so that I continually strive to achieve greater accomplishments. In addition, the fact that Darwin believed that his siblings did not affect his life that much shows his support for natural selection. This is because he believes that most traits are innate. Furthermore, I find it extremely intriguing that Darwin preferred being a chemist over a physician. He was well qualified for both, but found medicine to be boring which seems kind of strange to me. Medicine is so cool; it just seems difficult for someone to think it is super boring. By far the most ironic of them all, Darwin loved to shoot birds. This irony is due to his theory of natural selection, which was formulated after his studying of a multitude of birds while traveling to the Galapagos. In closing, Darwin seemed like a man that did not know what he wanted to do in the first major part of his life, and the idea of school seemed to be a waste of time in his eyes.
