Chapter five was interesting in how it approached scientific virtues. The most intriguing part to me was the discussion of habits, and how they are related to these virtues. By practicing correct scientific research, through following the scientific method, one is able to establish habits. These habits can help us understand what virtues are important for scientists. Having the habit of meticulously recording your observations, and staying organized throughout your study is crucial to the progression of science. However, I can understand that sometimes scientists take these habits to the extreme. This can end up in a disconnect between the scientist and the general public. While having these habits of being detail-oriented and showing objectivity can be beneficial in scientific research, it can also lead to downfalls in other aspects of one’s life. This is very noticeable in the case of Barbara McClintock, as she was so habituated in the methods of conducting science that she forgot to develop the other skills, such as people skills, that were necessary to succeed as a scientist.

In Ted Chiang’s book, Story of Your Life, I really enjoyed the problem solving that occurred when Dr. Banks was uncovering the speech and language of the aliens. However, if I was in her position, I think I would go insane. Once she began to talk in the Heptapod writing to the aliens, she gained the ability to see into the future. I believe that one of the beauties of life is that the future is unknown. That’s what makes life worth living. So, if I were to know my future, this would cause me to not see the point in living anymore. Because, what’s the point of existing if you already know the outcome?
